Anxiety is not a Defect

As I was preparing for my workshop this Saturday, June 6 from 9:30 am to 3:30 pm “Calming Your Anxious Mind with Mindfulness”, I was reflecting on my own experience of anxiety. Specifically, I was considering some of my thoughts and feelings about having the experience of anxiety, which I have had for over 30 years. When anxiety surfaces, I have discovered that one of my automatic beliefs is that I have a defect.

Loosen the Grip of Anxiety

I thought of the “grip of anxiety” in preparation for the upcoming Calm Your Anxious Mind with Mindfulness Workshop. In my own life, this pattern of agitation has been a never-ending story.

In the meantime, anxiety created a sense of helplessness often. Maybe this is one of the reasons why anxiety and depression are so commonly found together. I also thought that there must be something that has caused this challenging condition and if I could only find the source, the condition would resolve itself.

“I’ve had a lot of worries in my life, most of which never happened” Quote by Mark Twain

“I’ve had a lot of worries in my life, most of which never happened”.

I have thought of this quote many times after I first heard it a few years ago. It speaks to my experience. A lot of what I worry about just doesn’t happen. This understanding has helped to reduce the negative impact of worry, however, it hasn’t stopped the generation of “worry thoughts” in my mind.
