Find personal balance and ease of body and mind.
At Practical Wellbeing, our programs will help you to find ease of body and mind that is practical and long lasting.
The key component of all of our programs is the development of mindfulness, whether you are taking a Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction, or any other mindfulness program.
Our approach is modeled on the techniques in the world renowned stress reduction clinic at the University of Massachusetts that was started by Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn in 1979 with the development of the educational program Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR). The program is widely acknowledged for assisting you with the following:
- Lasting decrease in physical and psychological symptoms of stress
- An increased ability to relax
- Reductions in pain levels and an enhanced ability to cope with pain that may not go away
- Greater energy and enthusiasm for life
- Improved self-esteem
- An ability to cope more effectively with both short and long-term stressful situations (from the Center for Mindfulness)
All of Practical Wellbeing's programs are modeled after the MBSR approach. For example, if you attend a Mindful Meditation program, you will receive instruction in mindful meditation as taught within the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction program. The same applies to mindful yoga.
Mindfulness is about relating directly to your experience, to whatever is happening in your life. It is about paying attention on purpose and by practicing mindfulness, you can consciously work with your challenges and demands in a way that is non-reactive and proven to promote health and well-being.
Mindfulness is learned through the practice of mindfulness meditation and mindful yoga. We also provide theory when it is appropriate, but the emphasis is on practice. All the practice sessions are guided by the instructor which means you will not be left alone to struggle with "how to".
If you choose a program with a yoga component, the yoga is very gentle and straightforward and will be accessible by almost anyone. For example, we had a client in a wheelchair take the course with the yoga poses adapted to the chair. If you are an avid yoga practictioner, you will learn how to integrate mindfulness into familiar yoga poses for your practice.
An important part of learning mindfulness is to apply it in your life. You will receive guidance and suggestions for transferring the skill of mindfulness to all the various parts of life including work, home, friends and family among others.
At Practical Wellbeing, our classes are small and you will receive personal attention. You will get practice mp3 files and written support materials to help you integrate and enhance your learning.
