Meet Doug MacLean, B.Comm, MA, EdD

In 1995, Doug became familiar with the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) model outlined in the bestselling book Full Catastrophe Living – Using the Wisdom of Your Body and Mind to Face Stress, Pain, and Illness by Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn. Wanting to learn more, in 2000, Doug attended “Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction in Mind-Body Medicine at the Omega Institute in New York. This program is offered regularly by the UMass Centre for Mindfulness as part of the education and training curriculum designed to provide MBSR teacher education and training.

He returned from that program impressed by the content and inspired to develop programs based on the MBSR model to help others reduce their stress. He also took ongoing professional training with the Center for Mindfulness to improve his MBSR and teaching skills.

Doug offered his first Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction program in 2005. Since that time, the programs have been offered privately, through Mount Royal University Continuing Education, and U of Calgary Continuing Education. Doug has also offered his mindfulness courses a various Calgary organizations including the City of Calgary, the Calgary Public Library, Hunt Oil and others. In 2008, Doug became a certified yoga instructor, adding to his programs mindful yoga and mindful meditation classes at various Calgary and Cochrane yoga studios.

His academic achievements include a Doctorate in Adult Education, Master of Arts, and Bachelor Commerce. He has extensive teaching experience with adults in organizational settings and he is known for his ability to set a welcoming and comfortable environment for learning.
